Jul 19, 2016 Sword Coast Legends is a decent CRPG let down by an overall lack of imagination and irritating difficulty spikes.
Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PS4 (reviewed)GameCrate writer of Digital Extremes’ and N-Space’s digital Forgotten Realms RPG Sword Coast Legends back when it launched for PC in November, 2015. Libbey’s dissatisfaction with the game was shared by many other critics, and the overall disdain eventually led N-Space to issue a formal apology and a promise to improve the game with. Of course, said promise was never fully realized, since back in March of this year, leaving the fate of the planned console versions of Sword Coast Legends up in the air. The good news is that the console versions still managed to be released, the bad news is that Sword Coast Legends is still as much a woefully underwhelming experience on consoles as it is on PC. A Barebones Setup. Aside from the addition of a new Rage of Demons DLC story campaign (a campaign which isn’t much better than the base game’s story campaign despite the fact that it was originally planned as a paid DLC add-on), the console version of Sword Coast Legends has all of the same content as the PC version (including the community DLC packs which added in minor new features such as a playable Dark Elf race and new assets for the game’s DM mode). However, the console version still has the same glaring gameplay omissions as the PC version.
If you enjoy playing as staple Dungeons & Dragons character classes like the Druid, Bard, Barbarian, Sorcerer, or Monk, Sword Coast Legends will once again disappoint you as these classes have not been added in the months between the game’s PC and console releases. The actual crafting of your character’s physical features and stat allocations is quite robust, but overall the stats/skills/feats system is more confusing than it is intuitive, and the game’s graphics are so poor that it’s hard to create a character you can stand looking directly at for more than a few seconds. The voice acting for the pre-made campaigns is middling at best, and the overall plot for both the base campaign and Rage of Demons is so forgettable that it’s honestly hard to believe their stories are set in such an iconic and beloved world as the Forgotten Realms. A Step Backwards. What’s really frustrating about Sword Coast Legends (whether you play it on PC or consoles) is that older games already did what it tries to do so much better. Take the classic PC RPG game Neverwinter Nights for example. Neverwinter Nights is more polished, has more content, has better voice acting and a better story, and is just all around a much better game than Sword Coast Legends (at least in my opinion) and it’s more than 10 years old!Even more recent attempts to conjure up the “classic” PC RPG experience such as Divinity: Original Sin and Pillars of Eternity vastly overshadow Sword Coast Legends in terms of quality. Granted, I’m guessing that the lack of meaningful iteration between the PC and console versions of Sword Coast Legends is due at least somewhat to N-Space’s closing, but the fact the Digital Extremes made virtually no effort to improve the game or at least hire another developer to take a look at it is just the latest in a series of frustrations which ultimately spelled the game’s doom. Not The Game D&D Fans Deserve. On paper, Sword Coast Legends sounded like the ultimate successor to classic isometric RPG games, allowing players to both embark on pre-made adventures and also craft their own using the game’s Dungeon Master mode. Sadly, it would appear that the game’s tepid PC release did little to convince Digital Extremes that the game needed some major revisions. The console release of Sword Coast Legends is virtually the same experience as it is on PC, warts and all.I don’t know if Digital Extremes was hoping that the Forgotten Realms name would be enough to carry the game along, but they were most certainly mistaken in that regard. If you’re longing for a digital gaming experience which adequately recreates the thrill of playing a solid game of Dungeons & Dragons, you should avoid Sword Coast Legends at all costs, since the only feeling it is likely to conjure in abundance is disappointment.
